Music

Welcome to Music with Ms. Morris!

About Me:
My name is Katie Morris. I am a native of Chelyabinsk, Russia and was adopted at age 18 months. I grew up in Birmingham, AL and have participated in choir and band most of my life. I was a member of Girls’ Choir at my church; the Concert Choir, Spirit of Cahaba marching band, and wind ensemble at Oak Mountain High School; the Alabama All State Orchestra; and the Alabama Youth Symphony. In December 2018 I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education degree from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL. While in college I played flute and piccolo with the Marching Southerners and was a member of the JSU Chamber Winds and the JSU Flute Ensemble. I am excited to be at KPS and share my love of music with our students!

Music At KPS:
Every student at KPS receives instruction in music. Students will explore music through singing, performing, playing instruments, composing music, dancing, and other fun expressions of music. In addition, students will learn musicianship and how to develop the expression of music within themselves while interacting with their peers. KPS students will recognize and identify music symbols, read and notate music, listen to various genres of music, and learn the history of music and musicians – including those from Lee County such as Luke Bryan and Phillip Phillips. All music instruction at KPS is directly linked to Georgia Performance Standards for music and research-based approaches to music instruction.

Upcoming Events:
Each grade level will have a musical performance which parents, family, and friends are invited to attend. Detailed information about performances will be sent home at a later date. Our tentative performance schedule is as follows:

November – First Grade Veteran’s Day Program – date TBA

December – Second Grade Holiday Musical – date TBA

May – Kindergarten Play – date TBA

Wish List:
We are always in need of hand sanitizer, Kleenex, and Lysol or Clorox wipes. If you can donate any of these items, please send them to school with your student and specify to their homeroom teacher that they are for the music room.

Many of our KPS parents have backgrounds in music. If you are interested in being a special guest performer for our students, please send me an email. We would love to have you as our guest at KPS.

If you are crafty or artistic, please consider volunteering to assist with our set designs and costumes for our stage and play performances.
